Big Splash at the Perkins Braille and Talking Book Library

Big Splash at The Perkins Braille and Talking Book Library

Yesterday was my first day at the Perkins Braille and Talking Book Library, (BTBL).

I have to state that I had really been looking forward to this day. Working at the library, especially doing outreach, has always been a dream job for me. Talking to people about books and a free way to access them is like heaven for me.

Well, my very first event on my very first day was a staff meeting where I would be introduced to everyone. I know most people at the library but some are new and some I have not seen for a very long time. Here they were, all gathered around one table. I pulled out my chair; Kim announced that I was there. I spilled an entire cup of hot coffee all over myself. Now, how is that for a first impression? People will certainly never forget. Fortunately, I have a sense of humor and so did everyone else. We will all laugh about this for a long time.

I learned a lot about what the library has to offer other than talking books. They have thousands of large print books, and well over a thousand audio described movies on DVDs. Of course there is also the News Line service that now includes Reader’s Digest.

I am going to love this new part of my life. It certainly started with a splash.
