Keep Reading June 2016

Here we are again at the end of another month.
This was a good reading month for me. I think I read 15 books and one of them was 1,350 pages. Rest easy, it is not one that I am recommending.

My favorite book of the month was suggested by a friend. I probably would not have found it without the suggestion.
A Tale For The Time Being
By Ruth Ozeki

This book is just a little magical or is it?
A Tokyo teen ager is considering suicide. A novelist living on a small island off Canada finds the young girl’s diary and wants to help the teen.
How long has the diary been in the ocean? What about the letters that are also in the zip lock bag?
I just downloaded the two other books I could find by this author.
I would suggest this in audio. The NLS book is the commercial book and it is read by the author. She does a great job.

A Place Called Winter
By Patrick Gale

This book takes place in the early part of the 20th century. A somewhat successful Englishman involves himself in an illicit affair that forces him to leave his life in England behind and settle in a remote part of Canada. Eventually he is able to love again.
I love this book. It will surprise you.
I did find another book by this author and I think, although it is totally different I will love it as well.

The Danish Girl
By David Ebershof

This is another book suggested by a friend. I was somewhat confused by the movie. However the book is brilliantly written and perfectly clear. Written in 1929, this book takes you to the slightly over the top times in Copenhagen, Paris and Dresden. A marriage survives while the main character discovers that he is two people, a man and a woman. We watch him and his wife figure out who he really is.

All Quiet on the Western Front
By Erich Maria Remarque

I will suggest an older book each month. I will never tire of the classics or discovering a buried treasure.
This book was written in German in 1929. It vividly tells the story of three young men grabbed from school to fight in the trenches of The First World War this is one of those books that everyone should read. It will touch your heart and make you think. You will wish all students had to read this in school. All students everywhere in the world.

I have already selected most of my July books but I am always open for suggestions.
