I had a lovely vacation to Portugal that took up half of June.  I had some long flights but actually slept more than usual.  I did read some good books both before and during the trip.  Here are my favorites.

The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon

This book is actually rated for high school and older readers.  But remember how much you loved the Hate You Give and that was written for younger readers as well.  Two young people meet at the worst possible time.  They know they are meant for each other but the cards are stacked against them.  This is one of those books that is written for our current time but will live for a lot longer.  Maybe some time we can say that is how it used to be.

The Weight of a Piano by Chris Cander

An eight year old girl in the Soviet Union is given a very fine piano and loves playing it more than anything.  Years later in a frantic move to the US she loses the piano.  Several years later another young woman treasures this piano although she can’t play it.  It was a gift from her father.  This piano leads her down a path to understanding who she is and where she belongs.

I really liked this book.  I found it very hard to put down.

Tony’s Wife by Adriana Trigiani

This historic fiction takes place in 1932.  You will be transported into the world of music to meet to struggling musicians who find each other.  You will enjoy following them through their respective careers.

The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty

After reading everything I could find by her I did one last search and found this book from 2005.  It is very different from her more current books but I really enjoyed it.  It takes place on a very small Island occupied by one family.  One of the houses is left to a non-family member and the fun starts there.  This book is a lot lighter than her earlier books but makes for a nice summer read.
