People Who Are Blind and Cantaloupes

People who are blind and Cantaloupes

I know this title is beyond weird but let me explain.
It has come to my attention that people who are visually impaired or people who know people who are visually impaired may not be finding my blog. Although my goal is to show people who are visually impaired that they can live a full and even fun life, by not mentioning words like blind and low vision I may not be reaching people through search engines. So, I will try to use those terms more often.
I actually want to sing the praises of cantaloupes. Let me tell you how I cut up and store them and maybe I do it slightly different because I am blind.
I buy the heavenly melon and leave it on my kitchen counter for a few days. Now, actually here is a blind hint. Being blind gives new meaning to the expression, out of sight out of mind. I need to leave the cantaloupe where I will bump into it or I might forget about it and wait too long to cut it up.
I start by cutting it in half and using my hand to scoop out the seeds.
Nothing with that many seeds should ever feel threatened by extinction.
Then I cut each half in half and in half again.
Now I carefully cut off the skin trying to reach a balance between leaving too much fruit on the skin and cutting off my finger.
By the way, a sharp knife is safer than a dull one.
Next I cut each slice into small sections and store what I have not eaten in a plastic container to keep in the fridge.
If you want to spice things up a bit, put a little salt or chili powder on the slices before eating them.
This is the time of year where you won’t meet a bad cantaloupe. I can’t stop eating them.
