Keep Reading October 2016

Here we are closing October and getting ready to move into nasty November. I still had lots of good reading time on my porch.
I have quite a range of favorites for this month. It is hard to say what I liked best but here are some of those in the running.
Born On The Fourth Of July by Ron Kovic
This is a short book and it is a good thing because you can hardly take a breath while reading it. I read it from start to finish on a flight from Boston to Chicago and although it was a smooth flight I felt like I had been on a roller coaster. This Viet Nam vet tells it like it was and won’t let go until you finish. Why did we fight that war?

On a completely different note there is The Ladies of Covington Send Their Love by Joan A Medlicott
This is the first book in a series of I think 9 books. This is a gentle book about three delightful older ladies who share a house and their lives. If you feel the need to think getting older is not that scary this is a great way to spend a quiet afternoon or two. If you like it there are several more pieces of candy in that box.

Ice Palace by Edna Ferber

Here is the older book for this month. By book standards it is not very old. Recently I found three more Edna Ferber books that I have not read. Ice Palace is one of those books. This might be the last book she wrote. In the rough and tumble world of Alaska in the mid-1900s A young girl who has been raised by two loving but very different grandfathers helps them to understand that she will make her own choices.

The Tale of Murasaki by Liza Crihfield Dalby

This is a fictional tale of the woman who wrote the Tales of Genji in the 11th century. The Tales of Genji is supposed to be the first novel. It is really really long and I can’t imagine how this could have been written by hand. What did they write it on? Why did she write it? Who was she? Well, I have been toying with the idea of rereading the Tales of Genji but I can’t quite get up the nerve so I decided to read this much shorter novel. Unfortunately, I think I still might need to read Tales of Genji again.
