Keep Reading November 2019
I spent a week in Mexico and spent every available minute reading. I had been saving books for months to read on this glorious, extremely relaxing vacation. These books won’t be in any particular order. They are all wonderful and won’t let you down.
The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott was my last vacation read. In 1956, shortly after Boris Pasternak’s opus, Doctor Thiago is finished it is clear it won’t get published in the USSR. It is decided that the manuscript should be smuggled out of the country so it can reach readers all over the world. An Italian publisher brings the book to Italy where it is first released in Italian. A government group in the US translates the book into English and plans to smuggle the Russian version back into the USSR as propaganda. You get to know Boris Pasternak his lover and the women working in the US to complete the project.
Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson Is a short and gripping book. It uses the oh so popular back and forth in time style to tell a family story starting with the special coming out birthday party of a young girl. She wears her mother’s dress. Her mother never had her party because after the dress was finished she turned out to be pregnant. This would be a great book club book because it could start lots of good conversations.
The Dutch House by Ann Patchett has been on my reading list for a long time.
At the end of World War Two a young man makes a lot of money and decides to purchase a grand house that he has admired for years. Although living in this house was always his dream his wife and children did not share the joy of living in this house. Although even as adults they can’t quite give up watching the house from across the street. My audio book was read by Tom Hanks. He could even make the chapter numbers sound good.
The Turn of The Key by Ruth Ware filled my vocational need for a slightly scary book. I thought maybe I would be reading a new version of Turn of The Screw by Henry James. Although there were some similarities, this book stands well on its own. I don’t want to give too much away. This is a great airplane book because the time will fly by. Did I really say that?
