I have not talked about books for a while. It isn’t that I have given up reading but lately I have spent some time rereading old favorites. However, in the past few months I have found some special new friends that I would like to share.
Snow In August by Pete Hamill is a wonderful warm book from the 1990’s that I managed to miss. Lightly touched with science fiction and Jewish legend it tells the story of a twelve year old boy who struggles through a snow storm to perform his alter boy duties on a cold Saturday morning. He helps out a Young immigrant Rabi and they become fast friends. Residents of a tenement neighborhood in New York they face racial struggles together. The book takes place in 1947 after the child’s father dies in World War Two.
Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
This book takes you twisting and turning from the 19 60s and back and forth into the 30s and modern time. Full of surprises the plot pulls new characters into your heart right up to the very end. I won’t say much, I don’t want to spoil the story.
September by Rosalond Pilcher
If you have never been to Scotland, or if you have been there and fallen in love with the land and the people, this is the book for you. Multiple generations of neighboring families plan a formal dance and lives change drastically from the early planning stages right up to the night of the dance.
These are all great vacation books or in my case, sitting by the fire with a glass or two of wine books. You won’t want to put them down. Keep tissues handy.
