Thursday in Florence
Another early start.
I had a pastry rather than a sandwich and too much whipped cream on my hot chocolate, if there is such a thing. However it was dark hot chocolate.
We then headed for the Academia to visit the famous David. We used our rick Steve’s audio tour and it was great. Even though I could not see him, I have read so much about him that I had goose bumps when we walked into the hall. Then we were off to San Marco for another audio tour. This might have been our favorite thing so far. It is a quiet calm monastery where you get to visit the cells and they were quite wonderful with frescos for each cell. There was a hall of paintings by Fra Angelo that are a mix between medieval and rennaissance. They seem to glow from within.
There is also a library with beautiful copies of ancient writings that you can see.
Next we headed in the direction of home; we were not sure what we wanted to do next. Some of the streets are beginning to look familiar. We ended up shopping for some treats and bringing them home for lunch. Then it was nap time.
Joanne came around 6:00. She will stay with us for a couple of nights and then Peggy and I will spend the week with her in Pistoia.
She took us to a restaurant on the other side of the river. I had pasta with fennel and sausage and it was fabulous.
Next we went to the opera. It was Carmen. It was in a small English church. The seating was great and the space was perfect for the small but very well done presentation.
We walked home and all felt like it was a perfect day.
