Keep Reading December 2018
I can’t believe we are into another year. The good news is that there are plenty of great books to discover. Also, it is cold and sitting by the fire with a good book is a fantastic way to pass the time. A glass of tea or wine, depending on the time of day, does not hurt at all.
Here are some of my favorite books from December or shall I say the end of last year?
My number one best book is Educated: a Memoir by Tara Westover.
Memoir exploring the author’s path from being raised in a fundamentalist, paranoiac Mormon family where she was homeschooled to eventually working her way to graduate degrees at Cambridge and Harvard. Discusses hardships faced by the family, abuse at the hands of a sibling, and more.
I am using the description from the BARD website. You will wish this book was fiction. How can this happen in 21st century America?
Looking for a good mystery, well here you go. Sharp Objects, by Gillian Flynn could keep you up nights. A woman journalist is asked to return to her home town to write a story on a two grisly murders. It has been years since she was home and visited her mother and sister. This is really a page turner.
The Girl Before, Covers a subject that we would like to think does not exist.
Rena Olsen slowly leads us to understand how someone can be led to live a life that seems perfectly good but the lead character finds out her life has been a total lie.
I don’t want to give this story away but I really was both shocked and impressed with it.
It seems like I spent a lot of time reading books that are a bit on the dark side. They all sort of deal with issues of abuse. Maybe I will be a bit easier on myself in January.
