This will be an unusual selection of books for me. I will include two speculative fiction titles. I like that term far better than science fiction.
My first book choice for September is Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel. After most of the population is killed off by a super plague, the remaining population struggles to form a new world. Of course there are the nice and the not so nice. This is an easy read that will hold your attention. I would call this a great airplane book.
My next choice is Biloxi by Jane B. Shandra. A man is sure he is about to inherit money so he quits trying to make any. His life is going downhill fast. He adopts a dog that complicates his life. He does not get the money. He does have a great dog.
I recently reread the Handmaid’s Tale. I think I enjoyed it more the first time I read it. I feel that The Testaments is a bit of a commercial response to provide more material for the television series. However, that being said, I have not seen the series and I am glad to have read the latest book. I am sure I would read a third one if it should appear.
I think I have mentioned that I am trying to read all the Pulitzer Prize winning novels. In September I read In This Our Life by Ellen Glasgow. This book was written in 1941. It tells the story of a sister who steels her sister’s husband and how different members of the family deal with the trauma. I will look for other books by this author. If you are looking for something older to read, work your way through the list of Pulitzer Prizes. Remember that no matter how long ago a book was written, it will be new to you the first time you read it.
The Testaments by Margaret Atwood
