Keep Reading February 2019

I always love finding a book that is different than anything I have read. I have two books this month that fit that bill.
Killing Commendatory by Harumi Murakami Is a very long book that will take you on an unforgettable journey. He has plenty of time to develop strong characters that you are unlikely to forget. This is the latest book by this author. I look forward to read other things he has written.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, by Hank Green is also very unusual, but in a much lighter way. I never read science fiction and I guess this could be called science fiction. Many giant metal statues show up all over the world. The lead character is the first person to spot one. She quickly grabs a friend and they make a video that goes viral. The statues get named Karl, all of them. Why are they here, what do they want. This is a quick read, perfect for an airplane flight.

I mentioned recently that I am planning a trip to Portugal. This means I am reading anything I can find, almost anything, about Portugal. I found one of my favorite books for the month on this Portugal hunt. Night Train to Portugal by Pascal Mercier was written in 2004 and translated into English in 2008. In 2013 a movie was made and it is on Net flicks. The movie is actually really good but the book is oh so much better. Through some pretty strange circumstances the narrator gets a hold of a book written by a young man in Lisbon. The narrator travels from Switzerland to Lisbon to discover what he can about the author’s life. He meets some great characters that have aged 30 years since most of the material in the book. I didn’t even know there was a Portuguese resistance and it took place in the seventies. This is a great book, read it before you see the movie.
